George Gomez’s second pinball machine had quite the impact on modern pinball design. Though Gomez was disappointed in the film adaptation of the short story, the pinball machine took inspiration from both the film and original story to create a compelling cyberpunk themed pinball machine. The game’s “fan” layout was designed with speed in mind: every shot returns to the flippers at a brisk pace encouraging combo flow. The speed is only broken up by the glove toy, which players can control to place balls in a matrix of rollover switches, scoring awards and locking in the jackpot positions for cyberspace multiball. Johnny Mnemonic also famously has some of the highest scoring in any pinball machine, thanks in part to spinner millions and how repeatedly scoring hold bonus can compound this feature.
