Pokemon Grand Champion Competition

Overview

Players are divided into 5 Pokemon-themed teams. Each week, every player’s highest score is summed to create their team’s total score. Teams accumulate “Damage” (strikes) based on their weekly finishing position. After accumulating too much damage, a team “Faints” (is eliminated). The competition continues until one team remains—then a single player from that team will be crowned the Grand Champion.

Teams

Team Type Color Suggestion
Team Fire Fire Red/Orange
Team Water Water Blue
Team Grass Grass Green
Team Electric Electric Yellow
Team Poison Poison Purple

Eligibility & Joining

Who Can Participate?

  • Automatic Enrollment: All players in the Capital Pinball app with a Stern Insider username linked to their account are automatically entered
  • No Sign-Up Required: If you have a Stern username in your account, you’re in
  • Free to Play: There is no cost to participate in this competition besides the cost of the machine
  • No Obligation: Being enrolled doesn’t require you to participate – play when you want

When Can I Join?

  • Week 1 Deadline: Players who add their Stern username to their Capital Pinball account within the first week of competition will be assigned to a team.
  • Late Joiners: Players who add their username after Week 1 will be added with one strike, if they join after week two they will have 2 strikes when they join. After the conclusion of week three players will not be added.

Team Assignment

  • Teams will be balanced at the start of competition
  • When Teams are eliminated the players of those teams with less than 3 personal strikes will be assigned a new team. This will be done in a way to further balance the teams if possible.

Weekly Competition Rules

How It Works

  1. Play Period: Players can play as many games as they want throughout the week
  2. Score Contribution: Only each player’s highest score for the week counts
  3. Team Score: The sum of all team members’ best scores becomes the team’s score for the week
  4. Rankings: Teams are ranked 1st through 5th based on their team scores

Gym Leader Title

Each week, the player with the highest score on their team earns the “Gym Leader” title for that week. This recognizes top performers and encourages friendly competition within teams.

Gym Leader Reward: Potion

  • Each Gym Leader earns a Potion (healing item) that can remove 1 Damage from any player
  • Can be used on themselves or any teammate of their choosing
  • Potions can be saved and used in future weeks
  • Strategic use of Potions can save struggling teammates from elimination

Team Damage (Strike) System

Current Working Model

Weekly Position Damage Received
1st Place 0 Damage
2nd Place 1 Damage
3rd Place 1 Damage
4th Place 2 Damage
5th Place 2 Damage

Team Elimination

  • Damage Threshold: 6 Damage
  • When a team reaches the threshold, they “Faint” and are eliminated
  • Eliminated team’s players are redistributed (see below)

Individual Player Damage System

Players also accumulate personal damage to encourage consistent participation.

How Players Take Damage

Event Damage Received
Not participating in a given week 1 Damage
Being redistributed from an eliminated team 1 Damage

Player Elimination

  • Personal Damage Threshold: 3 Damage
  • When a player reaches 3 damage, they “Faint” and are personally eliminated from the competition
  • This prevents inactive players from being carried by their team

Encouraging Collaboration & Recruitment

  • Recruiting: More teammates = more chances for high scores
  • Coaching: Experienced players can teach newer players
  • Strategy Sharing: Teams can share tips and techniques
  • Practice Sessions: Teams can organize practice times together

Crowning the Grand Champion

The competition ultimately determines a single player as the Grand Champion.

Path to Championship

  1. Team Phase: Competition runs until only one team remains
  2. Individual Phase Begins: The winning team’s players continue competing against each other
  3. Personal Damage Carries Over: All damage accumulated during the team phase counts
  4. Strike-Style Elimination: Players are eliminated one by one until a Grand Champion remains

Individual Championship Rules

  • Players compete individually (team scoring ends)
  • Each week, players are ranked by their highest score
  • The bottom 50% each week receive 2 Damage
  • Players who reach 3 total Damage are eliminated (“Faint”)
  • Last player standing is the Grand Champion
  • Potions can still be used, but no new Potions are awarded during this phase
